This native of Camden, Arkansas performed as a teenager on Louisiana Hayride during the 1950s, when stars such as Hank Williams, George Jones, and Webb Pierce shared the stage. She also recorded a hit record, The Marriage of Mexican Joe. She returned from performances in California one day to notice all the other female singers agog over a new performer, Elvis Presley. She was smitten, and so was she. The two dated for a few months. She recalls everyone called him El. Like all fans, she was devastated at his death: "And thats what makes me sad when I think about him now. And thats what I thought about when he died. I thought he had a lot to do yet. I guess people go when theyre supposed to go but I think things could have been a lot different. It makes me sad. I dont think he was happy and he could have been. And I dont think he accomplished what he could have and wished to accomplish. He had so much to give. And thats what makes me sad."
