A resident of Henderson, Texas, Mr. McMillan served aboard the USS Enterprise in the last years of the Vietnam War. He recalls his first time on the deck during flight ops: The main thing that was dangerous for us was Flight Ops. Thats probably the most dangerous job at night on an aircraft carrier. It scary! The first time I walked out on the deck there in Flight Ops a Second Class took me out there, and I walked out from the island and looked around, and the next thing I know I was on the ground, my helmet was knocked off, my glasses were knocked off, everything was gone. As soon as I walked out, he whopped me upside the back of the head. I mean, it wasnt an easy one, either. And he said, Now, get your eyes behind your head, everywhere. Dont miss nothing! So after that I didnt. I knew everything that was going on around me.
