In the second draft lottery, college student Michael Harpers number came up a very low 13. That meant he was going to get drafted into the US Army. He completed training at Fort Polk near Leesville, Louisiana and served in Alpha Company 1st Battalion, 46th Infantry, American Division in 1971 and 1972. Looking back on the war, he believes serving on the front lines blurs the lines between the races, the sexes, and sexual orientation. All, he believes, could be good fighters.
