A Shreveport native, Mr. Autrey worked hard as a poor child, working at odd jobs, dodging gangs that preyed on him, and gained a scholarship to Notre Dame High School, a private school for African-American students where he graduated with honors in 1964. He joined the army national guard, but later transferred to the U.S. Air Force where he spent his career. He spent a year in Vietnam, and in assignments around the world as a jet engine mechanic. He knows the price of freedom.
