Drafted into service, Mr. Harris was sent to Vietnam in 1967 with 17th Cavalry, 196th Light Infantry Brigade, serving as an M-60 machine gunner. He may have died had not his best friend, Tom Giles, a medic and conscientious objector who was a Mormon from Utah, saved this Louisianans life. In a night firefight with North Vietnam Army regulars, the medic who didnt believe in killing fought off the enemy to save his friends.
