He loved music, especially the tenor saxophone, and big bands, but loved flying even more. After completing flight training, Ensign Zahn yearned to be a fighter pilot, and was especially hoping to fly the Grumman F4F Wildcat. Soon, he learned his fate was in the hands of a navy chief, and chuckles in telling the story. Ensign Zahn went on to serve in the Pacific. He was once shot down, and had to land in the ocean. At wars end, he was flying above the surrender-signing ceremony aboard the USS Missouri.
