A native of Fort Worth, Bob grew up in Mineral Wells, Texas and enlisted in 1969. After training, he saw the Vietnam War through the viewfinder of a 35-mm camera. As a writer and photographer with 10th Public Information Detachment, 196th Light Infantry Brigade, 23rd Infantry Division (Americal), Bob wrote features on soldiers doing their duty, including medics aboard dustoff helicopters, artillerymen manning the guns at fire support bases, and Army personnel helping to better the lives of civilians. He also flew into the bush with the grunts or infantry on search-and-destroy missions, carrying his camera as well as his M16 rifle. His first mission was almost his last when the company stopped for the night on a terraced field. A lieutenant, also on his first mission, decided to stretch out in the spot Bob was going to occupy, so the photographer-writer moved a few feet away.
