Anna Spillman was born in Donaldsonville, Louisiana and grew up in St. Francisville. She joined the Army Nurse Corps and went overseas with the 56th Evacuation Hospital. Soon after the Allied landings at Anzio, Anna arrived with the hospital and worked long hours, sometimes all day, in treating the wounded. Meanwhile, German artillery and the Luftwaffe were pounding and strafing even the aid facilities. Anna served throughout the campaign in Italy and in the invasion of southern France, then married another officer she met overseas, Marion Atteberry.
