Mr. Cross had graduated high school and was working when he was drafted in 1969. Trained in advanced infantry training with the military occupation specialty (MOS) of 11 Bravo, he was sent to South Vietnam and placed in 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division, as an M60 machine gunner. He soon learned he could trust no one among the civilian population, regardless of sex or age. His unit had just taken two prisoners, who were being questioned when he was ordered to help check identifications of civilians walking along a nearby road.
