Jim was a Saturday afternoon hero before he was a combat doctor and later, orthopedist. He won All-American honors as a running back at Texas Christian University before entering medical school, then serving as a surgeon and doctor with an infantry division in Vietnam. There, he came to respect deeply the men with whom he served.
