Adopted as an infant, Milton grew up in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, dropped out of high school, and joined the United States Marine Corps at age eighteen. On February 19, 1945, as a mortar man in Company K, 3rd Battalion, 25th Regiment, Milton rode an assault boat towards the black volcanic island, Iwo Jima, coming under heavy fire. Quickly, he learned, boot camp training could not replicate combat conditions.
