Guido C. Verbeck served as an artillery captain in the Vietnam War, first with 7th Field Artillery Battalion of 8th Field Artillery Regiment in 1967 and 1968. Although he missed family and friends during his one-year tour of duty, at least he had mail from them. The postal service, he recalls, was quite good in getting missives between Vietnam and America, or The World, as the soldiers serving over there called home. Soldiers especially loved letters from Americans they didnt even know. At the USO in Saigon, a soldier from Louisiana could reach into a basket and read a letter from someone in the Bayou State.
