He was there when it began. Mr. Banks was commander of Battery F of the 15th Coast Artillery: 16-inch guns mounted on Salt Lake Crater in Hawaii near Pearl Harbor. Soon after awakening on a peaceful, sunny Sunday morning, December 7, he heard some racket. Then, all of a sudden a big wham! He ran out into his backyard to see red circles on the wings of aircraft and knew America had just entered World War II. He quickly dressed and was sprinting to his battery when another lieutenant came running by with a .45 pistol:
