Roby Ryals, born Roby Elizabeth Bar, grew up in Chatham, Louisiana, where she married Edwin Ryals. A member of 107th Cavalry Regiment, Edwin was training in Eureka, California. Although she had never traveled beyond Shreveport, Roby longed for her husband, and was determined to cross the country to California, and there find work near where he trained. She stepped aboard her first train for the journey in April of 1943.
