A machinist mate on the USS Meriwether (APA-203) Mr. James served in the Okinawa campaign, where gunners aboard battled kamikaze planes. His shipboard duty, he recalls, was constant and exhausting, and for him, very hot. He worked in the boiler room, where temperatures never fell below 120 degrees.
