Kent L. Green was born in 1949 in New Albany, Indiana to Albert L. and Helen Lucas Green. As a young boy he enjoyed playing baseball, being a Boy Scout and attending Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico. Kent graduated from Clarksville high school where history, politics and government were his favorite subjects. There he played football and was active on the debate team. As a teenager he went to work for $175 a week as a projectionist at the local drive-in theater and was able to save enough money to buy a car. After graduation, he attended Indiana University Southeast part time while working as a projectionist at The Oak Theater. At 18 he joined the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, later called the Motion Picture Machine Operators. Kent received his draft notice in March of 1969 and went to Fort Knox, Kentucky for Basic Training and then Fort Polk, Louisiana for Advanced Individual Training in August of that year. After a 30 day leave, he reported to Fort Lewis, Washington then flew to Cam Ranh Bay and on to Chu Lai and LZ West where he joined Alpha Company, 4/31, 196^th LIB Americal Division, Third Platoon, arriving after the May-June battle. As an infantryman Kent carried the M16 rifle and sometimes the M79 grenade launcher. Throughout his tour there he engaged in a number of battles, once being knocked unconscious by a concussion grenade. Later he was seriously wounded by flying debris and had to be helicoptered out to Hawk Hill for medical attention. In June while setting up a night laager Kent began to feel ill, not knowing he had malaria. He was taken to hospitals at Cam Ranh Bay then to Chu Lai for 30 days, serving on light duty before going back to the field. Kent went on his first stand-down in January when he had been on LZ West in the field for 90 days and then to R & R in Hawaii. He was supposed to leave on the 3^rd of November but left Vietnam around the 24^th because he got a nine day drop. He returned to Fort Lewis and took a 30 day leave before returning to Fort Benning in the 197^th Light Infantry Brigade, 1^st of the 58^th Mechanized. After discharge he returned to his occupation as a projectionist, got involved in the union and got involved in the Kiwanis. He married Sharon Allen in 1980 and they have one son, Danny.
