Bruce Flett was born in 1951 at Highland Hospital in Shreveport, Louisiana to Ruth Evangeline and Deane Roberts Flett, Sr. His father was from South Dakota and moved to Shreveport to work and announce at KWKH in 1948. His mother was from Baton Rouge and also moved to Shreveport to work at a radio station and they met as actors in a local theater. Bruce has a brother, Buddy and a sister, Laura. Bruce and Buddy were influenced by the black and gospel music their maid sang and listened to. Their friend, David Eagans and his family had a great influence on their music because his mother was an opera singer and Van Cliburn was often at their house. When he was in school, Bruce spent a lot of time at Stan Lewis' Record Shop. In 1967, his began his first band, The Unpredictables. Bruce graduated from Captain Shreve High School in 1969 he and Buddy went to Dallas to the Texas Pop Festival on Labor Day weekend. The festival was two or three weeks after Woodstock and many of the acts from Woodstock were in Dallas. His band, Jelly Roll played at the Fountain Lounge on the Bossier Strip. He lived in Baton Rouge in 1973 and played in his band, Magenta. He returned to Shreveport and he and Buddy began playing together and started A Train. He has played all over the country, in Los Angeles with A Train, Portland with the Bluebirds and has also traveled to Canada, England, Athens, Greece, Amsterdam and Belgium. He has opened for Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King and John Lee Hooker. His favorite musicians are Sam Cooke, Van Morrison and the Rolling Stones and his favorite song is `A Change is Gonna Come' by Sam Cooke. He has three children, a son and two daughters. |
