Dr. Smith was born in Tonasket, Washington in 1957 to Ken and Joan Marty Smith. After graduating from high school he attended the University of Montana and during this time he began working for the Forest Service as a smoke jumper during his summer breaks. After graduating from college Brent attended medical school in Albuquerque, New Mexico on an Army Medical Scholarship, finishing in 1987 and then attending Officer's Training at Ft. Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas. Afterwards he completed his Emergency Medicine Residency Training at Ft. Hood, Texas. During that time he married his high school sweetheart, Lori Campbell. He and Lori would have two daughters, Karli and Katie. After schooling Brent spent 10 years on full active duty in the Army and another dozen years as a physician in the Army Reserve. During this time he participated in several deployments. Brent was deployed to Iraq in 1990/91 during Operation Desert Storm where he served in the 399th Combat Support Hospital and was attached to the 1st Armored Division at a Forward Support Battalion. In '94/'95 he was deployed to the Sinai Peninsula where he served as Assistant Force Surgeon for the MFO (Multinational Force), a peacekeeping force of three battalions. He ran the North camp medical treatment facility and supervised the physicians and medics from Columbia, Fiji, Netherlands, Uruguay and several other countries. He was deployed to Afghanistan in 2004/2005 serving in the 325^th Combat Support Hospital where he wore several hats that varied from field duty to the most Senior Medical Officer in the AO. It was at the 325^th where he also was in charge of the ER facility. His last deployment was to Iraq again in 2007 where he was the Chief of the EMT (ER). In 1996 Brent came to work at Willis-Knighton Hospital here in Shreveport, Louisiana where he was Chief of the ER department.
