"Everybody was behind the war," June recalls, including all members of her family. At age forty her father tried to enlist. Her mother worked with the Red Cross as a driver, and her brother served in the Pacific with the Sea Bees. June volunteered at the USO Building in Princess Park in Shreveport, and with the Red Cross at Barksdale Field. "I felt like it was something that I needed to do," she says of her war-effort work. On November 6, 1943, June married Samuel Patterson, a B-26 pilot from Battle Creek, Michigan, who served in Europe. Concerning the home front she particularly remembers rationing and the scarcity of goods, ranging from tires to silk stockings. In summer, she and friends went often to the movie theaters--the only buildings in town that were air-conditioned. She recalls V-J Day as "the one time they were drinking on Texas Street." |
